KOTTAYAM: A day after five third-year students of Govt College of Nursing in Kerala’s Kottayam were arrested for brutally ragging their juniors, a video surfaced on Thursday, showing the seniors laughing as a junior writhes in pain when pokedwith a geometry divider.
They counted the number of times they poked him with the sharp object.
The student is seen lying on a cot with his hands and legs tied up as the seniors pull line-dry clips attached to his chest.
They then pour cream and lotion over his body. Seniors stab various parts of his body with a geometry divider and draw circles on his stomach as the junior bleeds from the wounds on his foot.
They then remove his spectacles and smear a creamy substance on his face. The student cries in pain when dumbbells are placed atop his private parts while seniors share a laugh.
They force other scared juniors to record the video, even as the scared juniors try to talk to them. Kottayam district police chief Shahul Hameed said that they will ascertain whether college authorities or the hostel warden failed in their duty to protect the first-year students.
A source doubted the ignorance of a round-the-clock housekeeper about the ragging. Police will also verify if the accused bought narcotics with the money extorted from juniors.
A source said the juniors did not complain as one of the accused was a member of a Left-leaning students’ body. He has since been expelled from the group.
