KOCHI: Even after

CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan

made it clear that cadres facing allegations must face the law, disgraced CPM leader VA Zakir Husain remained elusive on Tuesday, a day after the high court denied him

anticipatory bail

in a criminal case.

Stressing that Husain should surrender before the police, Balakrishnan said that the party will probe into the circumstances that led to the Husain's visit to

Kalamassery area committee

office on Monday. Husain had sought refuge in the party office on Monday soon after the court turned down his anticipatory bail plea.

Though there were apprehensions that Husain would surrender before the investigating officer on Tuesday, he did not turn up. Sources in the party hinted that Husain might surrender before the investigating officer,

ACP of District Crime Records Bureau

, between 9am and 10am on Wednesday.

As per the court order, Husain can surrender before the investigating officer, if he opts so, between 9am and 10am on any day within seven days from Monday . After necessary interrogation, the investigating officer has to produce the accused before the magistrate before 4pm on the same day. The order further stated that the magistrate can consider regular bail plea by the accused and decide on merits on the same day.

Meanwhile, present area committee secretary TK Mohanan triggered a controversy by saying that Husain was not present in the party office on Tuesday. On Monday, Mohanan had said that Husain was at the party office. After Mohanan admitted Husain's presence in the party office, policemen were deployed in the locality to have a watch over him.

Surces said over 80% of the area committee members were against Husain's entry to party office on Monday.
