Kochi: As mercury climbs across Kerala, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘Yellow Warning' in 12 districts, signalling a period of intense heat and discomfort in the coming days.
The IMD has forecast heatwave conditions across several districts until April 19. A combination of high atmospheric temperatures and heavy moisture levels is expected to create ‘hot and humid' conditions, making the "real feel" temperature significantly higher than actual readings.
While Palakkad will continue to sizzle at 40 degree celsius, the intensity of sun's rays will be high in Kollam (39 degrees), Kottayam (38 degrees), Thiruvananthapuram, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta , Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod (37 degrees).
The department has advised avoidance of prolonged heat exposure, especially from 11am to 3pm. The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) issued high UV radiation alerts as the UV Index (UVI) touched dangerous levels (6-9) across various districts.
"Such weather is of health concern for vulnerable people like infants, the elderly, people with chronic diseases, and people exposed to the sun for prolonged periods or doing heavy work.
Heat cramps and heat rashes are likely during the peak hours of the day (11am to 3pm)," the IMD said in a statement.
It issued guidelines to the public like to wear lightweight, light-coloured, loose, cotton clothes; cover head while outdoors; drink sufficient water; and ensure that children, the elderly and those with pre-existing heart or kidney conditions remain in cool, shaded environments and never leave anyone in parked cars.
