Girl drowns in quarry pond in Kothamangalam

Kochi: A 17-year-old girl from Aluva drowned in a quarry pond in Kothamangalam on Tuesday evening. The deceased, Hadiya Hanana, daughter of Nishad of Aluva, had come to visit a relative's house at Cheruvattoor Kattamkuzhipadi, where the incident occurred.She had gone to the quarry pond with two other children when she drowned. Kothamangalam fire force received a call about the incident at around 5.15pm. The two other children also fell into the water but were rescued after their screams alerted workers at a nearby workshop, who rushed to the spot.Fire officials said the pond's edge was shallow but deepened gradually, a hazard Hadiya was unaware of. Scuba divers were deployed and retrieved her from the water by 5.45pm, but she had already died.
