Kochi: Actor-director Geetu Mohandas has won the global filmmaking award at the Sundance Film Festival, 2016. The feature film, `Insha Allah', won Geetu the award, which was announced in Utah, US, on Saturday, according to the Sundance website.
The movie has a tagline, “In Pursuit of Akbar.“
Besides Geetu, Cuban filmmaker Armando Capo (August) and Italian filmmakers Antonio Piazza, Fabio Grassadonia (Sicilian Ghost Story) and Moroccan film maker Abdellah Taia (The Treasure), also won the Sundance global filmmaking award.
Insha Allah, a bilingual (Malayalam and Hindi) movie, is about a 10-year-old boy from Lakshadweep, who embarks on a trip in search of Akbar, his elder brother.
Geetu had directed two movies, Kelkkunnundo (Are You Listening) and Liar's Dice, for which Geetanjali Thapa won the best actress award and Rajiv Ravi, Geetu's spouse behind the camera, won the best cinematographer award .
Liar's Dice was also India's official entry to the Oscars.
The Sundance film festival brings original storytellers together with the most adventurous audiences.
“The Birth of a Nation,“ directed and written by Nate Parker, who also plays the film's leading role, dominated the latest edition of the festival, winning the grand jury prize, besides being voted as the best movie.
