Kottayam: Two youngsters were on Friday arrested for attacking a local resident, who questioned them for riding bikes under the influence of alcohol, in Poonjar Thekkekara, Erattupetta, in the district. The arrested two were part of a group of nearly 10 young men who participated in the thrashing on Wednesday.
Saji, a CPM branch secretary residing near the road, and his father were injured in the attack on Vishu Day. Both are presently undergoing medical treatment. Saji's father has a fractured leg. Saji suffered injuries to his head and body.
The intoxicated group of youngsters arrived on bikes and fell on the road. Saji and others present there questioned whether they were riding under the influence and instructed them to park their bikes, leading to an argument. As more locals gathered, the young men retreated but later returned with friends and assaulted Saji and his father.
Those who tried to intervene were also assaulted. Subsequently, police were informed.
Abhishek and Abin, residents of Mesthiripadi, were taken into custody. Police filed cases against three others, who are expected to be detained soon.
