Centralized waste plants not fit for state: KSSP

Thrissur: The leader of the pro-Left people’s science organization Kerala Sasthra Sahithya Parishad (KSSP), Prof P K Ravindran, on Tuesday said the centralized waste management facilities are impractical and failures, and are not at all suited for a state like Kerala. The KSSP leader’s observations assume a special significance against the backdrop of the reported moves of the LDF regime to set up large waste-to-energy plants in different parts of the state. Prof Ravindran was delivering a talk on ‘Possibilities of decentralised waste management facilities’ organized as part of the diamond jubilee celebrations of KSSP.He said the centralized waste management facilities at different places like Njeliyanparambu, Vilappilsala, Laloor, Vadavathoor, Sarvodayapuram have been proved to be failures and have been closed down. The Brahmapuram project is also on the verge of closure.“It is a hypocrisy and expression of cultural decadence that Malayalis who get the human excreta processed at the septic tanks at their homes are demanding that their kitchen waste should be taken away by somebody else. We claim that we have ended manual scavenging and are actually promoting a similar demeaning practice,” he said.While the house owners should own up the domestic waste also, the local bodies must become the creators and regulators of the material conditions for ensuring decentralized management of waste, Prof Ravindran said.
