KOCHI: After the promise of bright Broadway nights, Kochiites may get more of the same with the corporation identifying Durbar Hall Ground as yet another spot to prime city's nightlife.The civic body will join hands with the district administration to develop the ground as a hub for nightlife activities."The only negative for Kochi, when compared with other metros in the country, is that we do not have an active nightlife," said mayor Tony Chammany on Monday."Nightlife is not about keeping restaurants open till 9pm or midnight. It's about having social and cultural activities in public areas even after midnight so that all sections of the society can enjoy city life. The corporation will try its best to promote nightlife here. We are aware about issues like the public transport system and accessibility. These will be addressed step by step," he added.District collector M G Rajamanickam said the administration along with the local body and police would ensure safety and public transport. "Cultural shows and other performances can be held at the ground. The administration welcomes it.
The ground will be given free to organizers of such programmes if they are ready to meet all other expenses," he added."Nightlife develops when a city grows and the police do not have any issues. We will make necessary arrangements, but the shortage of personnel is a cause of concern," said DCP (law and order and traffic) A Hari Shankar.According to Lalithakala Akademi secretary Vaikom K Shibu, Durbar Hall is equally important as Fort Kochi, taking into account its historical significance. "It was here the Kochi maharaja held his durbar. Most sports events also took place in this ground. Today, it remains a spot for parking, evening walks and for people to sit and relax. The place immense potential that needs to be explored," he said. "Like in other countries, we can have live performances, art shows and exhibitions day and night," he added.Petula D'Cruz, a banker from Vypeen, said that nightlife would be an amazing concept if women feel safe. "Authorities should ensure enough security personnel and transportation," she said.
