: Residents of Tripunithura had a harrowing night on Saturday as they could not sit in their houses due to poisonous air following thick smoke billowing out of Brahmapuram waste plant on

People in Irumpanam, Eroor and neighbouring areas sought medical help in the middle of the night as they suffered breathing problems. Smoke continued to suspend in the air till 9am on Sunday.

"Children, elderly and pregnant women were forced to seek medical help due to smoke in the air. Things have not changed in the morning too. We held meeting with deputy collector who said firefighters have been trying their level best to control the smoke. But when they pump water into the smoke, it spreads to neighbouring areas," said Chandrika Devi, Tripunithura municipality chairperson.

While disaster management deputy collector Sheeladevi said firefighters were creating more fire lines in the waste to control the smoke. "We expect smoke to be controlled by evening. Thick smoke billowing out of the waste heap has come down drastically compared to previous days," she said.

Brahmapuram waste management plant caught fire on Friday afternoon and has been burning since.
