As water flow recedes, tourists flock to now dry Anchuruli tunnel in Idukki

Idukki: Amid the unrelenting summer heat, the flow of water from Erattayar dam in Idukki has reduced, giving tourists an opportunity to revel in the sights of the scenic Anchuruli tunnel. The entrance to the tunnel, which carries water from Erattayar dam to the Idukki dam, has become more visible, resulting in a surge in visitors especially during the summer holidays. Earlier, strong currents had restricted access to the tunnel mouth. Tourists from across the state as well as outside Kerala are visiting the site. Authorities, however, caution that reaching the tunnel entrance during the rainy season is highly dangerous, as the powerful flow of water could sweep visitors into the reservoir. With the current drop in water levels, women and children are also venturing close to the tunnel entrance. Safety railings earlier installed by the Kanchiyar panchayat across the waterfall have been damaged due to strong currents. There have been instances of tourists entering inside the waterfall area. Officials warn that going too far into the tunnel could pose serious risks, including encounters with venomous snakes and the possibility of getting lost. In previous years, trapped visitors had to be rescued by fire and rescue personnel. The Anchuruli area continues to attract visitors with its perennial reservoir, the waterfall flowing from the tunnel into the reservoir, and the scenic islets visible in the distance. Authorities said large numbers of tourists also visit during the monsoon season to witness the full force of the Anchuruli waterfall.
