Thrissur: Former Congress MLA Anil Akkara filed a complaint before
Election Commission of India (EC) alleging that Prime Minister Narendra Modi violated the election model code of conduct by misusing official broadcast through Doordarshan for poll campaign in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.
Akkara, an AICC member, cited PM's address to the nation on Saturday to defend women's reservation bill which failed to get mandatory support in the Parliament. He alleged that PM, in his address through Doordarshan, specifically criticised political parties contesting in the poll-bound five states.
"As you are aware, assembly elections are currently underway in the states of Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, Assam and West Bengal. Consequently, the model code of conduct is in effect across the country until May 6,'' Akkara said in his complaint addressed to chief election commissioner.
"Despite being well aware of these regulations, Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi addressed the nation yesterday at 8.30pm via Doordarshan, a central govt-controlled broadcasting agency. This act is a clear violation of the Representation of the People Act and is a punishable offense,'' he said.
"By specifically mentioning the names of political parties contesting in these five states while using govt machinery and influencing Doordarshan authorities, the Prime Minister has misused his official position. This speech is fundamentally against the interests of the nation and constitutes a grave breach of election protocols'' said Akkara.
"Therefore, I urgently request EC to conduct a thorough investigation in the matter. I pray that legal action be initiated and cases be registered against all those involved, including the Prime Minister, under Representation of the People Act, Prevention of Corruption Act and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita to ensure that the offenders are punished according to law,'' he said.
