KANPUR: Chairman, Ganga Monitoring Committee of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) Justice Arun Tandon (retd) on Tuesday directed the regional pollution control board (

RPCB

) to issue show cause notice to Jal Nigam for not running the treatment plant and passing the effluent directly into Ganga.


He also asked the pollution control board to submit the data and the cleaning report of Ganga.

Justice Tandon, during his visit to the city, had inspected the treatment plant. Earlier, at a meeting with officials of the Pollution Control Board and Jal Nigam, he asked why the nullahs were discharging their effluent into the river?

Anil Gupta and VK Kansal, chief engineer and general manager of Jal Nigam respectively told Justice Tandon that Jal Nigam was cleaning the main sewer line and the work would be completed by October 30.

Wajidpur treatment plant, which had been closed due to rains, would also commence its operation soon, they said. While inspecting the Wajidpur treatment plant, Justice Tandon said that it was surprising that 130 and 5 mld plants and even 36 mld common effluent treatment plant were found closed, and the tannery water was passing through the channels.
