LUCKNOW: The Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL) has adopted Maanu, a 20-year-old rhino and her nine-year-old calf Pawan lodged at Kanpur zoo for one year's tenure.
Last year, the IOCL had declared the one-horned rhino as its brand mascot.
Sanjiv Kakkar, the executive director, and state head IOCL, said,”Our effort is to create awareness and protection of the five endangered species of rhinoceros. For the next one year, we will provide funds to the Kanpur aoo for the care of the two rhinos.”
IOCL will provide around Rs 6.5 lakh to Kanpur zoo for this purpose.
K K Singh, director of the Kanpur zoo, said,” There is much need to protect endangered rhinos. Proper food and medical attention is an essential pre-requisite for the survival of such a huge species.”
