Five convicted in dowry death case

Additional district and sessions judge II of Kanpur Dehat CM Dixit on Saturday convicted five persons of a family for dowry death and sentenced them to seven years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 5,000 each.

KANPUR: Additional district and sessions judge II of Kanpur Dehat CM Dixit on Saturday convicted five persons of a family for dowry death and sentenced them to seven years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 5,000 each.
The sentenced persons were identified as Shashi Bhushan, Babu Ram, Nirmala Devi, Deepti and Susheel alias Guddu, all residents of Sajeti village in Ghatampur tehsil.

According to the prosecution, Shashi Bhushan was married to Jyoti, daughter of Radhey Shyam of Fatehpur, on June 29, 2006. Her in-laws and husband were demanding a motorcycle and Rs 1 lakh for a plot and when Jyoti failed to fetch the dowry, they set her on fire on May 14, 2008. Jyoti succumbed to burns after four days of the incident. Before her death, she got her last statement recorded.
