Kanpur: Police cracked the case of theft of silver crowns from Siddhi Vinayak Ganesh Mandir at Sutarkhana, Ghanta Ghar here and arrested three persons, including a couple and a goldsmith, in this connection.
The accused were identified as Majid Ansari and his wife Anjum Parveen of Kasganj district. Police also arrested goldsmith Javed Ahmad, a resident of Mansoor Chowk in Gangdudwara area of Kasganj, who had purchased the stolen crowns.
Police said the accused sold the stolen silver crowns to Javed, who melted the crowns and made silver biscuits out of them with the intention of destroying evidence.
On April 12, seven crowns were stolen from Siddhi Vinayak Ganesh Mandir in broad daylight Police said the accused man stole the crowns with the help of his wife, when the on-duty security guard, Omprakash Gupta, had gone to bathroom.
In the CCTV footage, the youth was seen paying obeisance to the deity, before removing all seven crowns. Later, his wife concealed the silver crowns, weighing approximately 600 grams, in her clothes, keeping the child close to her to cover the same. Thereafter, the couple fled towards Raipurwa on a bike.
