KANPUR: A teenage boy got drowned in Ganga river at Ganga Barrage under Kohna police station limits here on Friday.
The deceased was identified as Ashiq Ali, a resident of Machariya Naubasta.
His four friends - Anis, Baccha, Punit, and Yasir were saved by the locals and admitted to Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital.
The incident occurred when the boys, all residents of Machariya Naubasta, went to swim in the river at Ganga Barrage.
The body of the deceased, however, could not be fished out till Friday late night.
The police said that Ashiq, Anis, Baccha, Punit and Yasir did not know swimming, yet they entered into the deep water of the river for bathing.
"They went towards the deep water and lost ground. The area where they slipped is very deep. In an attempt to save each other, all the five started drowning," a police official at Kohna police station said.
"The locals and divers, who witnessed this incident, also jumped into the river to save the boys and managed to rescue four but could not save Ashiq," added another police official.
