JODHPUR: A day after their daughter married a man from another caste against their wishes, Ashok Vyas and his wife Meena Vyas, who lived in a rented house in Pali, committed suicide by jumping before a train on Tuesday morning. Both died on the spot. The incident caused the train to halt for about an hour until the police arrived and cleared the tracks.
Police said that their daughter on Monday married a man from another caste against their wishes.
Ashok Vyas worked as a vegetable vendor, police said.
"The couple left their house in the housing board locality on Tuesday morning and reached Jodhpur road bridge, where they jumped before the Jodhpur-Indore train just before Pali station at about 9am," said an officer of Sadar police station.
The officer said that police recovered a suicide note from the pocket of Ashok's clothes, which read that they were ending their life as they could not bear their daughter's decision to marry a man from another caste.
The note also said that their son, Gaurav, was a nice person and they wished that his uncle and aunt would take care of him. The note added that they wished police do not harass him.
"We called him (the son) on his phone, but it was switched off. We are yet to find him," said the police officer, adding that his parents had reportedly sent him to a relative's home in Jodhpur by bus. According to reports, the daughter had appeared before the city SP on Monday morning and her parents were also called there. They tried their best to convince their daughter against marrying the man of her choice but she remained adamant and refused to go home with them.
