SRINAGAR: As temperatures plunged below zero in Srinagar on Monday, residents congregated around bonfires to combat the severe cold wave affecting the Kashmir valley.


Srinagar, which serves as the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, experiences winters characterised by frigid conditions alongside picturesque landscapes.

The winter period includes "Chillai-Kalan," a 40-day stretch of severe cold from December 21 to January 31--- featuring the lowest temperatures and maximum snowfall in the region.


Local residents find warmth by gathering near traditional "kangris" (firepots), whilst savouring the renowned Wazwan feast in warm indoor spaces.

Residents protect themselves from the harsh weather by wearing Pashmina shawls, wool clothing, and traditional wool headgear. Visitors and inhabitants alike require thick winter coats, hand protection, and sturdy footwear during the winter season.

The winter season in Srinagar presents a remarkable experience for visitors whilst locals navigate through the challenging yet stunning period, encompassing cultural practices, snow-covered vistas, and weather-related difficulties.


As winter arrives, Shimla, the capital city of Himachal Pradesh, experienced snowfall, covering the region in snow.
The snowfall in Shimla created a beautiful scene as snowflakes gathered on trees, coating their branches and leaves with a pristine white layer.

Parked vehicles in the area were covered with accumulated snow.

On Sunday, the high-altitude regions of Lahaul and Spiti in Himachal Pradesh experienced snowfall, transforming the landscape into white.

The Machil sector, located in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir, also witnessed fresh snowfall on Sunday.

The snow-covered landscape creates a peaceful environment, offering visitors and residents alike a serene experience amidst the pristine winter surroundings.
