Transport dept orders trackers on flying squad vehicles

Jaipur: The transport department has ordered installation of tracking systems on all flying squad vehicles by June 15, tightening oversight of enforcement operations.

The directive, issued during a review meeting Tuesday, instructs transport inspectors to issue five daily challans against overloaded vehicles, signalling a push for stricter, measurable action on violations.

In Jan, RTOs were directed to issue 10 challans daily for overload vehicles, a common concern for road safety across the state.

Transport commissioner Purushottam Sharma said, “Every transport inspector must issue challans to at least five overloaded vehicles daily; only then would they be considered active in the field.”

The commissioner instructed transport officers to take effective action at local level, which he said is missing currently. Instructions were issued to all RTOs and DTOs to intensify checking drives.

The commissioner also instructed all transport officials to keep a check on their behaviour while they are out in the field issuing challans, after multiple cases have been reported from across the state where transport department officials allegedly misbehaved with locals.

Taking a strict stance on the entry of touts into transport offices, the commissioner also warned that if touts were found inside transport department offices, action would be taken against the concerned official.

The commissioner added that for challan cases taken to court, the deposit of 50% of the amount would be mandatory. A target has been set to recover 25% of outstanding taxes by June 30.

“With proper enforcement, road safety will improve and people will follow traffic norms too. Proper enforcement throughout the year automatically generates revenue for the department,” said a senior official.
