MPs of smaller parties flag concerns over delimitation, women’s quota

JAIPUR: Three Members of Parliament from smaller parties in Rajasthan — Amra Ram (CPI-M), Hanuman Beniwal (RLP) and Rajkumar Roat (BAP) — have demanded an all-party meeting over the proposed constitutional amendment, the delimitation process and the assessment of its impact on women from marginalised and economically weaker sections under the Women’s Reservation framework.

During the ongoing special session of Parliament, the MPs raised concerns over the Centre’s plan to link the implementation of one-third reservation for women with a fresh delimitation exercise based on the upcoming census. They stressed that such a move requires wider political consensus to ensure that constitutional changes do not adversely affect the representation of marginalised communities, particularly in Rajasthan.




Ram alleged that the timing of the session was politically motivated. “The session appears aimed at influencing the Bengal elections. The opposition was not taken into confidence while pushing for an amendment that could deepen divisions between northern and southern states,” he said, adding that speeches by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah indicated a political intent behind the move.

BAP MP Rajkumar Roat expressed apprehension over the manner in which delimitation exercises could be carried out. Referring to the delimitation in Jammu and Kashmir, he said it had “shaken the confidence of the opposition” and warned, “There is a fear that delimitation in Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP) areas could be designed in a way that divides tribal voters and reduces their collective political strength.” He reiterated the demand for an all-party discussion.

Beniwal also questioned the proposed process, particularly its implications for Rajasthan. Targeting the BJP, he alleged that the women’s reservation issue was being used for political gains while delaying its actual implementation.
