JAIPUR: A mounted policeman was killed while another was injured after being hit by a car near OTS Circle at JLN Marg early on Sunday. One police horse was also killed in the accident. The policemen were patrolling on horses when the incident took place. Sixty-four-year-old car driver, who was under heavy influence of alcohol, was arrested by the police and booked on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
According to police, the incident took place at 12.45 am on Sunday when Sukhdev (56), a constable and his associate Ajay Singh (29) were doing mounted patrolling on two police horses. "Suddenly, a rashly-driven car hit constable Sukhdev (56), who was moving on the left side of the road. In the collision, the horse got stuck into the front side of the vehicle and was dragged for almost 30 metres. The driver was under heavy influence of alcohol and finally the vehicle stopped after hitting an electric pole," said a senior officer of Gandhi Nagar police station.
Soon after the incident, a police team from nearby Gandhi Nagar police station and an ambulance rushed to the spot. "The horse died on the spot while Sukhdev was rushed to SMS hospital with fatal injuries. He succumbed to the injuries while his colleague is undergoing treatment at the hospital," the officer added. Police quoting some of the eye-witnesses said that the mounted patrolling team was moving on the left side of the road and had come for their routine night patrolling.
"We have registered a case under Section 308 (attempt to culpable homicide not amounting), 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 429 (mischief by killing or maiming cattle, etc.,) of Indian Penal Code (IPC)," said the officer.
