JAIPUR: A two-year-old male leopard that was rescued from Motuka Bas Dhani area of Jaipur on Thursday was found dead by forest officials in his cage on Friday morning.

Officials said the leopard died due to traumatic shock after it was attacked by villagers in self defence on Thursday where the animal attacked five people including a ten-year-old. The leopard was captured after six hours of operation on Thursday from a university building where it was hiding.

Dr Arvind Mathur, senior veterinarian with Nahargarh Biological Park who was involved in the rescue operation said, "The leopard was active till Thursday night when it was fed properly and even drank water. In the morning, the caretaker saw that it had died. Prima-facie it seems that the leopard died due to traumatic shock as it had wound marks on its head and other body parts. In the post-mortem examination, we found blood mixed fluid in its thoracic cavity, which is mainly the lungs, heart, liver."

Incidents of leopards straying into villages due to a scarcity of food and water in the region have increased over the past few years. The senior veterinarian said that man-leopard conflicts are common in this region with many leopards dying after being beaten up by residents. He said that in 2020, a leopard had died in a similar manner when it was beaten up by residents in Achrol range of Jaipur.
