JLN hosp docs perform India’s first trauma-induced gastric transection surgery
Ajmer: Doctors at JLN Hospital have performed what they claim is India's first documented surgery for trauma-induced gastric transection — a rare condition in which the stomach splits into two parts — marking the sixth such case reported worldwide.Senior surgeon Dr Anil K Sharma said a 29-year-old labourer suffered severe abdominal trauma in an industrial accident in Kishangarh's Marble City. "Because of the extremely heavy pressure, the patient's stomach split into two parts, which is called ‘Gastric Transection' in medical terminology. This is only the sixth case worldwide of this happening due to trauma and India's first case," Sharma said, while addressing a press conference Saturday.
JLN Medical College principal Dr Anil Samariya and hospital superintendent Dr Arvind Khare said the patient also sustained rupture of the spleen, kidney injuries, eight shattered ribs and two pelvic fractures. "The trolley loaded with marble went out of control and struck his abdomen. The severe shearing force badly crushed the body," Khare said. Dr Amit Yadav said the patient was referred to Ajmer after primary examination at a local hospital. On arrival, he had a 10 cm deep abdominal wound with internal organs visible and signs of a hip fracture. On Feb 6, doctors performed an emergency exploratory laparotomy. Large internal bleeding was controlled, the abdomen was cleaned and the severed stomach was surgically reconnected. A feeding jejunostomy was also performed to provide nutrition. The surgical team included Dr Anil K Sharma, Dr Purnima Sagar, Dr Mehul Singhal, Dr Naman Somani and Dr Vipin Deep Singh, supported by anaesthetists Dr Kuldeep, Dr Jyoti and Dr Ekta, and nursing staff Shri Naveen.
