JAIPUR: A doctor employed with a private hospital rammed his speeding SUV into a barricade, injuring two policemen seriously at JLN Marg near Fortis Hospital post Monday midnight. His attempt to flee from the scene was foiled as he was immediately arrested by the police with the help of passers-by.
The doctor has been arrested on charge of attempt to murder and several other sections of IPC.
According to the police, the doctor was driving his vehicle under the influence of liquor. His vehicle hit the barricade first and then it hit an autorickshaw which was already stopped by the policemen at the barricade, where a checking was underway for drunk driving.
Driver of the autorickshaw Mahesh and his two passengers Shakil and Salman were miraculously saved in the accident. They sustained minor injuries. Autorickshaw driver and one constable, who suffered minor injuries, were rushed to the private hospital for first-aid. However, two policemen suffered serious injuries, who were taken to SMS Hospital.
“The accused, who was driving the vehicle has been identified as Dr Gupil Patrick, who is posted at a private hospital. He was speeding under the influence of liquor when his vehicle collided with a barricade, injuring seriously the policemen on duty there. He has been arrested. He attempted to flee from the scene,” Mahendra Kumar Sharma, additional commissioner of police (ACP) Malviya Nagar told TOI.
A case has been registered against the accused under Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty) of IPC.
The police said that he was returning after attending a marriage ceremony at a hotel on JLN Road and was heading towards his residence at Mission Compound at Ajmer Road. The police said that the 30-year-old accused doctor, after completing his MBBS degree, joined a private hospital in the city ten months ago. He was driving an SUV.
The police claimed that they foiled his bid to flee after the accident and brought him to Sawai Man Singh Hospital for his medical check-up. His check-up was done from 2am to 2.30am. Samples of his blood and urine were also taken to find out the quantity of alcohol in his body. He was handed over to the Jawahar Circle police.
