Brain-dead man’s organ donation saves three lives
Jaipur: The family of a 44-year-old man from Sanganer donated his organs after he was declared brain dead at SMS Hospital, helping save three lives and marking Rajasthan’s 83rd successful cadaver organ donation.
Omprakash Soni, a resident of Vatika village, suffered critical injuries in a road accident on May 3 when an unidentified vehicle hit his motorcycle. He was initially admitted to Mahatma Gandhi Hospital and later shifted to Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital as his condition deteriorated. Despite continuous treatment, doctors declared him brain dead on May 7.
Following counselling by the organ transplant team, Soni’s wife Seema Soni and brother Mahendra Soni consented to donate his organs. Dr Mukesh Bhaskar, nodal officer of the organ transplant programme at SMS Hospital, along with transplant coordinators and representatives of Mohan Foundation, explained the importance of organ donation to the family before the procedure was carried out Friday.
Officials said both kidneys were transported through a green corridor to the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS), New Delhi, for transplantation, while the liver was transplanted at SMS Hospital.
Medical education commissioner Babulal Goyal said Rajasthan has so far recorded 291 organs and tissues donated through 83 cadaver donations. These include 154 kidneys, 71 livers, 35 hearts, nine lungs, two heart valves, two pancreases, and 18 corneas.
SMS Hospital has conducted 36 cadaver organ donations, making it a key centre for organ transplant services in the state.
The health department appealed to people to pledge organ donation after death, calling it one of the greatest acts of humanity capable of saving multiple lives. .
