JAIPUR: The special court conducting trial in the case of recovery of a live bomb during the 2008 Jaipur serial bomb blasts rejected the bail application of an accused, Mohammad Sarwar Azmi, on Friday.

The court said in its order that other accused in the case, Ahmed Siddi Bappa alias Yasin Bhatkal and Asadullah Akhtar alias Daniel, have said in their statements under Section 164 that Azmi was involved in the blasts they carried out in Jaipur. The statements of Bhatkal and Daniel were recorded before the magistrate and cannot be denied at this stage, said the court, adding that it is a different matter how the prosecution proves those statements.

While passing the order, judge Ramesh Kumar Joshi said the accused has committed a crime that damaged harmony between religious communities and disturbed peace, creating fear in common citizens and society.

The sections under which the accused has been charged have a provision of life imprisonment. If the accused is granted bail, the chances of his coming back are slim, and there is every possibility of him subverting the case and threatening the witnesses, observed the court.

He has been in jail for 14 years.
