: A senior surgeon from Agra, who had gone 'missing' from his house on Tuesday night, was finally rescued by the police from a hideout deep in the ravines of Dholpur district early Thursday morning.

Nearly 100 heavily armed cops from Dholpur and about 20 policemen from Uttar Pradesh police surrounded the hideout in the Moroli area of the district and freed Dr Umakant

Gupta

. The 60-year-old surgeon was found shivering in fear after repeated beatings by the

abductors

.




Abductors had demanded Rs 5 crore ransom

said police had also arrested two accused, the woman who honey trapped the doctor and the driver who took the doctor to Dholpur. The accused have been handed over to the Agra police for further investigation. Some of the accused managed to flee.

Sources in Rajasthan police claimed that the abductors had demanded Rs 5 crore from Gupta’s family. The extortion angle is being probed by the UP police.

The state police also claimed that the abduction was the handiwork of the notorious Badan Singh gang that operates in

Chambal valley

. The search for other culprits is underway. Dr Gupta runs a nursing home in Agra in nearby Uttar Pradesh. He had left his home on Tuesday night at around 8pm in his car. His family was worried when Gupta did not return.

Unaware of the incident, a head constable of Dholpur police intercepted a car trying to skirt police checkpoints. The cop informed the police control room and chased the suspicious vehicle. The driver was arrested and the police learned from his interrogation that the car belonged to a leading surgeon from Agra.

relayed the news of the doctor’s abduction to his Agra counterpart. By Wednesday morning, heavily armed police parties arrived and crossed the gharial-infested Chambal river.
