Indore: Two persons, a lawyer and a deputy sarpanch, were killed in separate road accidents in Ratlam district on Monday.
Hanuman Prasad Agarwal (63), a senior lawyer, died after his scooter was hit by a black car near Sajjan Singh Statue intersection. CCTV footage showed the vehicle, bearing a Delhi registration, hitting Agarwal and dragging him for a short distance before fleeing the scene.
Agarwal succumbed to his injuries during treatment at district hospital later in the night. The accident triggered protest by Ratlam Bar Association members at Station Road police station with lawyers alleging that the police were shielding the accused.
CSP Satyendra Ghanghoria said that the car had been seized and the driver detained. Authorities are currently verifying if the vehicle is officially attached to a senior railway official.
In another incident, Sanju Gurjar (45), deputy sarpanch of Jamunia village panchayat, was killed on Mhow-Neemuch four-lane highway. Gurjar was going on motorcycle to a wheat procurement centre when a car with an Indore registration hit his bike from behind near Prakash Nagar bridge. He died on the spot.
Witnesses and video footage from other commuters revealed that the occupants of the car were performing stunts, with passengers hanging out of the vehicle windows shortly before the collision. Police have registered a case and are investigating the footage to identify those involved.
