More than 500 women, including IMC sanitation workers, draped in traditional saris participated in the walkathon. Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava administered a solemn pledge to the participants to eliminate single-use plastic from their daily lives and adopt cloth bags instead.
Addressing the participants, the mayor said public participation and teamwork, specifically from women, are the reasons Indore remains a national leader in cleanliness. He highlighted how women ensure sanitation by separating wet and dry waste at home before handing it over to collection vehicles.
"Today, aware women are giving a powerful message of boycotting single-use plastic by walking in saris alongside our Safai Mitra sisters," the mayor stated, describing the event as a symbol of female power and social responsibility.
He also used the platform to encourage citizens to support the Waste to Best campaign. He appealed to residents to deposit unused items at the city's 3R (reduce, reuse, recycle) centres to bolster environmental conservation efforts.
