Indore charges ahead: EV sales cross 73,000 amid global fuel volatility

Indore: As global oil markets grapple with the fallout of ongoing conflict in the Gulf, Indore has solidified its position as electric vehicle (EV) powerhouse of Madhya Pradesh. New data from regional transport office shows that the city has surpassed the mark of 73,000 electric vehicle registrations till March 31.

The momentum intensified in recent months, largely spurred by the rising cost of crude oil linked to Middle Eastern geopolitical tensions. In the last quarter alone, Indore saw approximately 5,000 new EVs hit the road, with March recording a peak of over 2,000 sales, RTO records show.





Indore RTO Pradeep Kumar Sharma said that the surge in electric vehicle sales was driven by a combination of rapid infrastructure development and shifting consumer priorities.

"Indore Municipal Corporation and private players are aggressively installing charging stations across the city," Sharma said. "Beyond being eco-friendly, these vehicles are proving to be significantly more 'pocket-friendly' for the average commuter," he added.

While the overall revenue collection for Indore RTO faced challenges this fiscal again, the green energy sector remained a bright spot. The transition isn't limited to smaller formats; there is a growing appetite for luxury electric cars, electric trucks and transit buses.

Despite the EV boom, the Indore RTO is navigating a complex financial landscape. For the third consecutive year, the office missed its annual revenue target, recording a deficit of Rs 362.94 crore in last financial year.

The primary cause is the Vikram Vyapar Mela in neighbouring Ujjain. The fair's 50% lifetime road tax rebate had incentivised buyers — particularly in the luxury segment — to register their vehicles in Ujjain (MP-13) rather than Indore (MP-09). While Indore's revenue dropped to Rs 812 crore this year, Ujjain's fair generated over Rs 225 crore in revenue, facilitating more than 41,000 registrations in a single month.

While the tax revenue may be migrating, Indore's streets are undeniably turning green, signalling a permanent shift towards a sustainable automotive future.
