IMC mandates use of treated water for construction, service centres, gardens

Indore: Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) has mandated use of treated sewage water for all major construction projects, automobile service centres, and public gardens, a step seen as a major push toward water conservation in the city.The directive is specifically aimed at government agencies, like National Highways Authority of India, PWD, Indore Development Authority and Housing Board."The aim is to ensure potable water is not diverted for non-essential use," said Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav.Municipal commissioner Kshitij Singhal has instructed building inspectors and zonal officers to ensure that construction sites and service stations stop using borewell or Narmada (potable) water. The Commissioner warned that legal action would be taken against entities found using fresh water for vehicle washing or construction activities.To facilitate this transition, IMC has established 35 dedicated hydrants across the city at key locations like Bapat Square, Vijay Nagar, Regional Park, and Nemawar Road.The water is supplied through a network of existing and nearly completed sewage treatment plants (STPs), including facilities at Meghdoot, Bilawali, Bijalpur, and zoo. While some public gardens are already being irrigated with this water, IMC is expanding the network as new STPs reach completion.The water will be charged at Rs 1.40 per thousand litres.IMC has simplified procurement process for private individuals and organizations. Treated water can be obtained by paying a prescribed fee at eight specific zonal offices, including Sukhlia, Vijay Nagar, Nehru Stadium, and Hawa Bangla.The initiative aims to create a sustainable "circular" water economy in Indore, preserving high-quality drinking water for residents while utilizing recycled water for the city's rapid infrastructure development and industrial needs.
