Indore: A day after 38-year-old man died by suicide in police custody in Ratlam, Namli police station TI Gayatri Soni was shifted to the police lines while head constable Narayan Jadaun, who was on night duty, was suspended.
The man had been arrested on the night of April 15 after his 16-year-old daughter had accused him of rape. During early morning hours, the man, while in custody, used the drawstring of his trousers to hang himself from a water pipe near a toilet.
The case has sparked a controversy after it was revealed that the deceased had submitted a written complaint to the police on the morning of his arrest in which he had claimed his wife and in-laws were conspiring to frame him after he caught his daughter on a video call with a boy.
Despite this, police only filed the daughter's FIR later that afternoon and arrested him in the night. "A judiciary probe is underway in the matter and based on the report, appropriate actions will be taken" SP Amit Kumar said.
The man's relatives protested at the station, demanding the arrest of the wife and daughter for filing a false report. Both have been taken into police custody for questioning and were unable to attend the funeral.
