95 Simrol villagers get training in organic farming, construction skills
Indore: Indian Institute of Technology-Indore (IIT-I) trained 95 farmers and villagers from Simrol block in organic farming, construction skills and post-harvest management as part of efforts to strengthen sustainable rural livelihoods. The training focused on three thematic areas — organic farming technologies, construction materials and related skill development and post-harvest solutions through the PDI system. Participants took part in practical demonstrations, hands-on sessions and interactive workshops led by faculty members and technical experts.
The centre for rural development and technology at IIT-I organised a two-day skill development training programme on Feb 21 and 22 at Gaushala, Nayagaon under gram panchayat Simrol in Mhow tehsil of Indore district. The initiative was conducted under the DST-SEED (department of science and technology — science for equity, epowerment and development) project for livelihood interventions through community-based training programmes.IIT-I director prof Suhas Joshi said, "At IIT-I, we strongly believe that technology must address real societal needs. Through initiatives like this DST-SEED supported programme, we are working closely with communities to create sustainable livelihood opportunities, particularly for those at the bottom of the pyramid. Empowering rural populations with practical skills and appropriate technologies is essential for inclusive and equitable development."Experts shared inputs on modern organic farming practices, efficient utilisation of locally available construction material and scientific post-harvest management techniques aimed at minimising losses and improving value addition. The programme emphasised practical learning to enhance technical understanding, employability and income-generating capabilities.Officials said the initiative reflects IIT-I's continued focus on bridging knowledge gaps at the grassroots and promoting technology-driven, inclusive rural development in the region.
