Those who came to Manipur after 1961 will be deported: CM Biren Singh
IMPHAL: CM Biren Singh has said anyone, irrespective of caste and community, who came to Manipur after 1961 will be identified and deported. Speaking at the launch of a skill development programme here on Monday, Biren said 1961 is the base year for the ILP.
In June 2022, the state cabinet decided to adopt 1961 as the base year for determining the “native status” for implementation of the ILP. Earlier in December 2019, the Centre had reintroduced the ILP after widespread agitation. It came into effect from January 1, 2020 even as many civil bodies and political parties demanded the adoption of 1951 as the base year. Under the ‘Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation, 1873’ the ILP was enforced during British rule. It restricts entry of ‘outsiders’ in the state without permission. It was, however, withdrawn from Manipur in 1950.
