HYDERABAD: Habeeb Nagar Police have arrested six people for selling a two-month-old boy for Rs 45,000. The main accused is the boy’s mother, who sold him off to her neighbours to meet the household expenses after she was deserted by her husband.

Zoya Khan, 22, from Subhanpur in Nampally, Ayesha Jabeen, 28, a housewife from Chanchalguda who purchased the boy, her mother Shameem Begum, 50, a housewife from Aghapura, Shameem’s sister Siraj Begum, 51, from Aghapura, and two mediators, Sk Mohammed, 30, and his wife, Tabassum, 25.
On August 11, Habeeb Nagar Police received a complaint from Abdul Mujahed, 29, manager of Daruwala bar and restaurant in Subhanpura, Nampally, alleging that his wife has sold their two-month-old son to Sk Mohammed and Tabassum Begum from the neighbourhood for Rs 45,000. Police took Zoya Khan into custody and during the questioning she confessed.
On August 3, 2020, Mujahed quarrelled with her over a petty matter and went to his his parent’s house in MS Makhta, leaving Zoya and their at their house in Subhanpura, Nampally. Zoya became upset with the behaviour of Mujahed. As she did not have money to take care of herself and the baby, she decided to sell off her son, Habeeb Nagar inspector P Shiva Chandra said.
Zoya contacted the other accused offering to sell her son. She agreed to sell the boy for Rs 45,000 and after receiving the money, she handed over the boy to the accused in the first week of August. On August 8, Mujahed returned home and inquired about their son. Zoya told him that she has sold off the baby boy. After failing to trace him, Mujahed lodged a police complaint. Police traced the boy to Ayesha’s house in Chanchalguda on Tuesday night and arrested her along with the other accused. The boy was handed over to his father.
