HYDERABAD: Urging students of Bahujan and other discriminated communities to take up active politics, Radhika Vemula said until these communities are represented in Parliament, the community will have to rely on others to be heard.
Speaking at the sixth death anniversary and remembrance meet of her son and Dalit scholar Rohith Vemula on University of Hyderabad campus on Tuesday, she said: "For about 15-20 days after my son died, I visited several MPs and MLAs of all parties except BJP.
It was during these visits that I realised that we, Dalits and Bahujans, need to create political leaders too who will sit in Parliament and talk about our issues. If we do that, then we need not go to others requesting help."
She welled up as she started speaking and become emotional, remembering her son. She stressed on the need for Rohith Act. Radhika spoke on discrimination against students of the community. Three Dalit scholars in the last seven years died owing to caste discrimination on campus, she said.
Speaking at the event, Bhim Army president
Chandrashekhar Azad Ravan asked the Telangana government to prove that it was truly against BJP and its ideology by dropping cases against four research scholars who were suspended along with Rohith.
