HYDERABAD: Karkhana police on Tuesday arrested Sangareddy Congress MLA Toorpu Jayaprakash Reddy alias
Jagga Reddy in an election-related bribery case.
Reddy had organized a function to celebrate his wife’s birthday at Gun Rock gardens function hall in Secunderabad on Saturday evening with voters from Sangreddy. A Static Surveillance Team (SST) raided the function hall after receiving an anonymous tip-off saying that Jagga Reddy was distributing gifts to voters.
On spotting the SST team, Jagga Reddy and others fled from the spot. Police had seized 49 items from the function hall, including cell phones, pressure cookers, mixer grinders, DVD players, microwave ovens and gas stoves.
Karkhana police registered a case against Jagga Reddy and others under section 171 B & E (Punishment for bribery) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and other relevant sections of the law. On Tuesday, Jagga Reddy surrendered before the Karkhana police. “We arrested the MLA and released him on bail,” Karkhana inspector Y Nageswara Rao said.
Police are gathering evidence against the other accused.
