HYDERABAD: Madhapur police are yet to take a call on granting permission for the show of stand-up comedian Vir Das at Shilpakala Vedika on November 20. The comedian's show in Bengaluru, scheduled for Thursday night, was cancelled after protests by right-wing activists. Police received an application seeking permission to conduct the show of Vir Das at Shilpakala Vedika.
"We have received an application from the event manager, Sanket, to organise the performance of Vir Das on November 20. We have not yet granted permission. The application is still pending with us," Madhapur police said.
Vir Das's show in Bengaluru was cancelled after a right-wing group alleged that the comedian had defamed the country in the past.
On Thursday, Vir Das posted a video on his Twitter handle, saying: "I made this video after one of my shows, 'Just in Case'. I have no interest in media spectacles or being used for headlines. I'm an artist. I shouldn't be on the news. Many assumptions are made about my content. I trust my art and my audience to speak for me. #TrustTheAudience."
Similar demands were made by the right-wing groups in the past regarding stand-up comedian Munawar Faruqui's show at Shilpakala Vedika in August, asking police and the state government not to grant permission for the event.
However, the event was held amidst protests and subsequently Goshamahal BJP MLA T Raja Singh was arrested for posting a video on social media offending religious sentiments of people.
