HYDERABAD: With one blow, Manohara Chary chopped off her daughter’s forehand and another blow left her with a 12-inch cut on her neck and jaw line. As profusely bleeding Madhavi was rushed to a multi-speciality city hospital, a team of four top doctors, including a vascular surgeon, an orthopaedic, neuro and plastic surgeons began a marathon surgery.
“She is conscious but her condition is very serious.
Her chopped portion of the hand is hanging by some skin. We have deployed top doctors for the 10-plus hour surgery,” said a spokesman at Yashoda hospital.
After the brutal attack, Madhavi was in severe pain and slumped to the ground after her drunk father’s repeated assault. Manohara ran away because of the fear of being lynched. As crowd gathered at the spot, some clicked pictures of the girl shrieking in pain.
Passers-by escorted her to Neelima Hospital in Sanathnagar, where doctors said her injury was too severe for them to do any reconstructive surgery. “We managed to stop the bleeding and she was conscious throughout,” said Dr Aditya Vikram, chief critical care specialist and medical superintendent of Neelima Hospital.
Soon, her mother-in-law Rama Devi rushed to the hospital and escorted her to Yashoda hospital. At Neelima hospital, Sandeep was pacing up and down the corridor. “I want to be by my wife’s side. She needs me,” said Sandeep, while doctors and nurses held him back.
Doctors attending to him said most injuries were on facial area. “We had to give eight to 10 stitches on the angle of the mouth. He is in deep shock and every 10 minutes he says he wants to be with his wife. We will probably discharge him on Thursday, but he can’t talk right now as his wounds are still raw,” said Dr Vikram.
DCP (west zone) AR Srinivas said, “Manohara said he was not aware of the affair till wedding.”
