Hyderabad: Telangana High Court took a serious note of the state allegedly delaying implementation of its earlier directions on the applicability of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS) to retired judicial employees in the state, while dealing with contempt cases filed by 65 retired employees of various courts in the state over non-compliance with the high court's orders granting them benefit under OPS.
A division bench comprising Justice P Sam Koshy and Justice Nandikonda Narsing Rao on Thursday directed the state's finance secretary and law secretary to comply with the orders by June 10 and cautioned that contempt proceedings would be initiated against the authorities if the orders are not complied with.
The petitioners were appointed through direct recruitment in 2004. However, due to administrative delays, their appointment orders were issued only in 2005. This resulted in the petitioners being denied the benefit of the Old Pension Scheme and General Provident Fund, as the new pension scheme came into effect from Sept 2024.
Aggrieved by this disparity, the employees approached the High Court, which, by a common order in March 2025, directed the state to extend the OPS benefit to the petitioners. The court also directed the state to undertake a one-time exercise to obtain options from all similarly situated employees and to complete the process within three months.
However, with the directions not being implemented, the petitioners filed contempt cases against the state govt.
