HC questions Telangana over delay in municipal polls

HYDERABAD: The Telangana high court on Friday questioned the state govt over the delay in conducting municipal elections and sought a clear timeline for the same. The court directed the govt's counsel to submit comprehensive details.

The directions were issued during hearing of a petition filed by Samundar Pelli Rajender, a Nirmal farmer, who sought court's intervention against inaction of govt and the State Election Commission in conducting polls to the Nirmal Municipal Corporation, whose term expired on March 25.

Senior advocate Prabhakar, on behalf of petitioner, argued that inaction of govt and the SEC was unlawful. Senior advocate Vidyasagar, representing SEC, informed the court that the election process would begin once necessary formalities, such as ward-wise reservations, were completed.

The govt's counsel sought two weeks' time to obtain instructions from authorities. The court postponed hearing to July 11.
