Govt urges ‘Dry Day’ Fridays to curb mosquito-borne illnesses
Hyderabad: The Health Department has issued an advisory for monsoon preparedness urging the public to observe ‘Friday as Dry Day' each week to eliminate stagnant water around homes.Residents are advised to take precautions against mosquito-borne diseases. People have been asked to ensure that windows are secured with mosquito nets or screens, and that beds and cribs are covered with mosquito nets. "Use mosquito repellents as a precaution. Maintain domestic drains to prevent water stagnation. Septic tanks should be covered with mesh to stop mosquito breeding," the advisory stated.To prevent waterborne infections such as acute gastroenteritis, jaundice, and typhoid, the public is advised to drink filtered or boiled water. For protection against airborne infections like viral fevers and influenza, people have been advised to use hand sanitisers frequently, and cover their mouths with a handkerchief when sneezing or coughing."If anyone develops flu-like symptoms, such as a cough with fever, headache, sore throat, or body aches, they should visit the nearest govt health facility," the advisory added.As part of its precautionary measures, the govt has arranged for special beds, IV fluids, and essential medicines at all public health facilities, according to the Health Department.
