GUNTUR: A district sessions court at Narasaraopet convicted former legislator Challa Venkata Krishna Reddy and sentenced him to one year imprisonment and fine of Rs 25,000 in connection with a cheque bounce case on Tuesday.
Krishna Reddy took a hand loan of Rs 4 lakh from a merchant of Narasaraopet, S Punna Reddy, in 2003. Nearly after four years, Krishna Reddy issued a cheque for Rs 4 lakh in favour of Punna Reddy.
However, the cheque was dishonoured by the bank due to insufficient balance in the Krishna Reddy's account.
As Krishna Reddy ignored all pleas of Punna Reddy to repay his amount, the latter filed a petition in a court at Narasaraopet. The lower court after going through the evidences had convicted former legislator.
With court granting time for appeal, the former legislator filed an appeal in the district court. He had also filed a quash petition in the same court. The district court too concluded that the former legislator had deliberately avoided payment to Punna Reddy. The district sessions judge B Syam Sunder on Tuesday confirmed the lower court's verdict by handing one-year imprisonment and Rs 25,000 penalty on Challa Venkata Krishna Reddy.
The court had also issued a warrant against Krishna Reddy which would disable him to buy further time to file another appeal. Challa Venkata Reddy of TD represented Guntur-2 segment during 1994-99. He joined Congress before 2009 elections but quit to join YSRCP.
