Despite onset of monsoon, residents stare at dry taps
Hyderabad: The monsoon season has failed to put an end to water woes of people living in various parts of the city. Right from Balaji Nagar and Eenadu Colony in Kukatpally to Gafoor Nagar in Madhapur and even Singareni Colony in Santosh Nagar, residents across these places rue how they are still faced with an acute water shortage forcing them to cough up extra bucks to buy water tankers.
Most affected are pockets which house families from middle and lower income groups. Locals from these areas say that the situation hasn’t improved in the past few years.
“We have to shell out an additional Rs 2,000 every month towards water tankers. It’s taking a huge toll on our pockets and authorities must do the needful to end this crisis. They should start supplying water for a few extra hours,” said Vijayasri B, a resident of Kukatpally.
Others resident living in Eenadu Colony in Kukatpally, aired similar concerns. “We thought the maintenance charges in our apartment will be reduced after the monsoon season sets in. But there has been no such development as we are still buying water tankers,” said Veerender Rao, a techie living in Kukatpally.
The condition of residents is the up-scale Madhapur is much the same. Residents here complain of limited water supply throughout the year. “I thought our water woes will end with the monsoon season setting in. It has been a week since the rains started and still we are reeling under a major scarcity,” said Ahsan Khan, a resident of Gafoor Nagar.
Those living in the Moosarambagh belt of Malakpet have a different worryof water being supplied to their homes at odd hours of the day.
“We get our water supply at 2:30am, which is a very inconvenient time for us. While we have repeatedly requested water board officials to fix this issue, our pleas have fallen on deaf ears. Our entire day goes for a toss because our sleep cycle is disrupted,” said Avinash N who has been living in this area over 10 years.
Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) officials deny the water crisis and insist the situation has improved significantly in recent times. In fact, officials claimed that laying of the proposed water pipeline — to distribute water to 11 GHMC peripheral circles with help from the Housing and Urban Development Corporation — will further improve the situation.
“A pipeline worth Rs 290 crore is being laid only for Kukatpally area. After the construction work is completed the water woes will come to an end in Kukatpally area,” said V Venkateshwar Rao, DGM (E) of KPHB colony municipality.
