HYDERABAD: After participating in a day-long strike, government doctors called off their agitation late on Tuesday. Throughout the day, medical services at government hospitals were partially affected. The doctors had stopped working in protest against Sunday's assault on C Bangaraiah of King George Hospital in Visakhapatnam by the relatives of a patient who died in the hospital.
The government reportedly agreed to four major demands that included arresting the attackers and enhancing security at government hospitals. "In view of (the) accomplishment of the main demand — arresting the accused — we will resume all services immediately, AP Government Doctors' Association (APGDA) secretary-general D Ranganath said in a release.
Earlier in the day, out-patient (OP) services were partially hit and no new admissions were made at government hospitals here. However, doctors kept the emergency services going. "I have come from Narsapur, waiting for the doctor since the past three hours. Can they not have any consideration for old and poor people like us?," asked P Mysamma, waiting outside the nephrology ward. There were around another 30 patients like her outside the ward. At Niloufer hospital the scene was even worse with patients at the OP being sent from one block to another. A patient at the gynaec ward was furious. "My caesarean operation is due on Wednesday and doctors tell me that there are chances it will not be performed. They advised me to go to a private hospital," said G Vijayalakshmi of Sangareddy. The situation was similar at Osmania General Hospital with scores of patients left unattended.
