VIJAYAWADA: After playing the cat and mouse game for almost four months, police have finally charge-sheeted V Chamundeswarinath, the former Andhra Cricket Association's most influential administrator, for alleged sexual harassment of women cricket players. The Machavaram police on Wednesday filed the charge sheet against Chamundi under Sections 506, 509 and 354 of IPC based on the complaint lodged by two players, Mounica Sai and Ramadevi. With the charges filed under non-bailable sections, the arrest of Chamundi is imminent.
While Section 354 attracts a maximum punishment of seven years of imprisonment for use of criminal force and assault on a woman with an intent to outrage her modesty, Section 506 carries an imprisonment of two years for criminal intimidation and Section 509 attracts a simple imprisonment of one year for using a word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman, if the charges are proved.
"The charges against Chamundeswarinath were proved during our investigation, hence we filed the charge sheet," said ACP Avula Subbarao. The first complaint against Chamundi was lodged on June 27, a few days after he returned from the England tour where he represented Team India as manager at the T20 World Cup. Mounica and Ramadevi in their complaint alleged that Chamundi's men threatened to eliminate them if they blew the whistle on the sexual misdeeds of the suspended ACA general secretary. Chamundi, who has connections with top people from all walks of life, including bureaucrats and politicians, reportedly thought he could weather the storm but things went awry after the incumbent president of ACA, Gokaraju Gangaraju, resisted his moves.Curiously, Chamundi played a key role in installing Gangaraju as president when he wanted to remove his guru in the association, Nekkanti Venkata Rao two years ago.
