Cantonment seeks flood response team

Secunderabad: The Resident Welfare Associations in Cantonment have called for an emergency disaster management system to address flooding issues.Despite facing major floods in 2000 and 2020, the Secunderabad Cantonment Board is yet to establish a dedicated emergency response unit. Recent rains prompted the RWAs to demand a separate emergency disaster management system from the SCB chief executive office. “While the GHMC’s emergency teams act swiftly to clear water stagnations, remove uprooted trees, within hours of rains, the SCB’s sanitation wing, with its skeletal staff, takes at least 18 hours,” members of RWAs told TOI. T Satish Gupta, president of the Vasavi Nagar Welfare Association, emphasised the need for a dedicated emergency response system, citing the risk to human lives during the monsoon. The residents demanded that SCB officials address the cleaning of an open nala passing through residential colonies, which are at risk of flooding. “The clogged open nala causes major inconvenience to families,” said Satish Gupta. Another key demand is updating the decades-old drainage system in Cantonment’s fifth ward, which frequently overflows. Satish urged SCB officials to take proactive measures to mitigate flood risks for the affected families.
