hyderabad: one-year-old nagalakshmi succumbed at the gandhi hospital on monday, taking the toll in sunday's north kamalnagar blast case to three. incidentally, the first birthday of nagalakshmi was celebrated on saturday evening. the family members in the celebration mood forgot to turn off the regulator on the gas cylinder after cooking. nagalakshmi's mother, surya kumari, got up as usual on sunday morning and switched on the tubelight in the kitchen, leading to the major explosion. while surya kumari, her husband venkateswara rao and their children nagalakshmi and shiva suffered injuries in the accident, their neighbours g subramanyam, 63, and his grandson chandrasekhar, 5, died instantly when an adjoining wall collapsed on them. subramanyam's daughter hema malini, her husband krishna rao and relative vasanth kumar suffered injuries in the blast. all the injured were rushed to the gandhi hospital, where nagalakshmi died. subramanyam, who lives in the adjoining colony, arrived at her daughter's home only on sunday morning and surya kumari entered the kitchen to prepare a cup of tea for her father when the mishap took place. police said the house belonged to m krishna murthy, a retired ecil employee, who rented out the two portions to venkateswara rao and krishna. they both work in a private company. keeping in view the extent of blast police initially suspected it could have been caused due to storing of some explosives. "but now our enquiries revealed that the blast was caused due to gas cylinder," a kushaiguda police official said. following the incident, police are advising the people, especially housewives, to be cautious in switching off the gas cylinders after the cooking is over during the evening hours. in case of any gas leakage, people should contact the nearest gas dealer for carrying out repairs.
