Animals jostle for space in Gandhi boys hostel
HYDERABAD: The Gandhi Medical College boys hostel may look outwardly comfortable, but a chat with the students paints a different picture.
The boys hostel meant for 250 members, is stuffed with nearly 400 students, which includes the house surgeons as well. "The hostel was initially meant only for students till their fourth year.
The house surgeons were supposed to be allotted another hostel.

But since no such accommodation came their way, they have refused to shift out of here," said S Gopi Krishna, a fourth year MBBS hosteller.
Four rooms have been converted into a dormitory . For lack of space, the gym and the TV room were also turned into dormitories.
Though the gym has now been shifted to the college cellar, the TV room has been restored, following protests by students.
Out of the eight geysers in the hostel, seven were not working, revealed some students. "Since the past year, cats, dogs and monkeys have been straying inside the hostel.
There have been instances when dog-catchers had to be called to take them away, but still there are lots roaming around freely. Despite several complaints no concrete measures have been taken," said Gopi Krishna .

It is not just the under-graduate students who are facing accommodation woes, the post-graduates are also not spared. Of the 250 post-graduate students, 60 of them stay in special wards, on the hospital's seventh floor, which was meant for patients.
"Six months ago, a hostel was constructed for PG students. We could not shift into it for lack of basic infrastructure facilities," said N Shankar, president of the AP Junior Doctors Association (APJUDA).
Due to lack of space a number of students are forced to take up alternative accommodation near their college even if it pinches their pockets.
While the students gave vent to their discontent, the principal of Gandhi Medical College claimed ignorance to the poor facilities offered.
"There is a separate fund for the maintenance of the hostel. There is an administrative officer to look into these issues. I had no idea about this and will look into the matter," she said.
On the issue of space crunch she said:"Yes there is a strain on the existing accommodation but it will not last for long. There is a separate hostel coming up for house surgeons soon."
Talking about the animal menace, she added, " The students complained about it some days ago and I have asked MCH to do the needful."
