HYDERABAD: A 22-year-old was hacked to death in Chilkalguda, Secunderabad on Thursday night in a case allegedly linked to a long-standing relationship.
The victim, Bommana Yavan, was a third-year BTech student. He was attacked around 9pm near Indira Nagar Road No. 5 in Chilkalguda. Police said he died from multiple injuries inflicted with sharp-edged weapons.
The incident has caused tension in the area, with protests by the victim’s family members.
According to the police, Yavan had been in a relationship with a girl from Medibavi, Chilkalguda, since his school days. She was his junior at school. Police stated that the her family members had allegedly opposed the relationship.
Police said that the attack occurred while Yavan was watching a cricket match with his friends, Karthik and Subba. Preliminary investigations suggest that the young woman’s brother, Paramesh, and her brother-in-law, Sai, along with a few others, attacked Yavan with knives.
Witnesses told the police that the assailants repeatedly stabbed the victim before fleeing the scene. Yavan sustained severe injuries and collapsed. He was rushed to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
The murder sparked outrage among the victim’s relatives and local residents on Friday.
Family members staged protests and accused the woman’s relatives of carrying out the killing over the relationship.
Tension prevailed near the woman’s residence as angry protesters demanded immediate arrest of the accused.
Police personnel were deployed in large numbers to prevent any escalation. Senior officers held discussions with the victim’s family members and assured them that strict action will be taken.
Investigators said that prima facie, the motive appears to be disputes arising from the relationship between Yavan and the woman. A case has been registered, and efforts are underway to apprehend the accused. Police are collecting technical evidence and examining eyewitness accounts.
